December 2nd, 2011 marked the day my husband left on a 12 month deployment to Afghanistan. A few days later, I found out I was pregnant. On January 13, 2012 I watched on the ultrasound as the doctor told me the baby did not have a heartbeat. I then underwent a dilation and curettage procedure to remove the dead fetus. The series, Silence, explores the grieving process, solitude, and devastation of losing my first child and exposes the pain of having gone through this trial alone. Silence is a statement within itself as, astonishingly, one in every six pregnancies ends in miscarriage. However, it is odd that very few women openly share this experience, thus making the subject fairly taboo.
